What is address burning in Ripple?

Address burning in the Ripple network deactivates an address. This does not mean the address is deleted — you can still use it later. In this case, the required reactivation amount (base reserve) will be reserved from your deposit.

What is a base reserve:

Ripple requires every address to keep a base reserve — a minimum amount of XRP locked by the network to maintain the address.

When you burn an address:

  • The address is deactivated
  • Part of your base reserve is returned
  • Part is kept by the network as an address deletion fee
  • To use the address again later, required base reserve will be locked from your deposit amount
